The Canton of Zurich, in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), is set to launch a groundbreaking pilot project for automated public transport in the Furttal region.
Starting in spring 2025, autonomous vehicles will be tested to complement existing public transport services, particularly in areas where traditional bus services are not economically viable.
This initiative aims to enhance mobility options for residents in more remote areas, allowing them to order rides via an app to nearby pick-up points.
The project, which is expected to draw interest across Europe, will initially feature self-driving cars, with plans to introduce small buses by 2026. Safety remains a top priority, with vehicles monitored by a central control center and accompanied by safety personnel during the test phase.
The Canton of Zurich and SBB are investing significantly in this venture, with the goal of making the service self-sustaining within five years.
