Zurich's E-Bus Troubles Spark Diesel Return

Published: 2024-12-17

The city of Zurich is facing significant challenges with its new electric buses.

Due to issues with charging stations and vehicle malfunctions, including faulty doors and air conditioning, the buses are often unreliable.

To maintain service, Zurich's public transport authority (VBZ) is temporarily using older diesel buses from other regions, such as St.

Gallen and Liestal.

These replacement buses, in red, yellow, and brown colors, will be seen alongside Zurich's usual blue-and-white fleet.

The manufacturers, MAN and Hess, are covering the additional costs and working to resolve the problems.

Despite these setbacks, Zurich remains committed to its goal of transitioning to an all-electric bus fleet by 2035.
