Zurich's Transit Faces Challenges and Changes

Published: 2024-12-04

The Zurich Public Transport (VBZ) has faced a challenging year marked by a series of tragic tram accidents and financial difficulties.

In 2024, five fatal tram accidents occurred, highlighting safety concerns and the need for increased pedestrian awareness.

The VBZ also struggled with a significant personnel shortage, leading to a reduced service schedule and a projected deficit of nearly 12 million Swiss Francs.

However, efforts to recruit more staff have been successful, allowing the VBZ to resume normal service schedules by December 15, 2024. Despite these challenges, customer satisfaction remains high, and the number of passengers has slightly increased compared to 2023. The VBZ is also addressing future infrastructure needs, such as the Tram Affoltern project, which faces delays due to financial and legal hurdles.

The organization is committed to improving safety and service as Zurich continues to grow.
