Zurich experienced a sharp rise in tram-related fatalities in 2024, with six deaths marking the highest toll since 2019. Among the tragic incidents, a heavily intoxicated man fell under a tram at Central station and was dragged over 230 meters, leading to his death.
Another fatal accident occurred the same day when a cyclist collided with a tram, succumbing to injuries later.
These incidents highlight the growing challenges of urban mobility and safety.
While the Zurich Public Transport (VBZ) reported a decline in non-fatal accidents, the fatalities overshadowed these improvements.
Officials attribute some risks to increased distractions like smartphones and plan a safety campaign in 2025. Additionally, VBZ is testing tram airbags in a pilot project to enhance safety.
