Switzerland Rethinks Transport Future

Published: 2025-01-29

Switzerland is rethinking its transport strategy after voters rejected a $5 billion highway expansion and rising costs for rail projects.

Federal Councillor Albert Rösti has tasked ETH Zurich Professor Ulrich Weidmann with reviewing over 260 rail and road projects to prioritize future investments.

The initiative, called "Transport 45," aims to create a comprehensive plan integrating road, rail, and urban transport by 2045. Rösti emphasizes the need for a balanced approach, ensuring both road and rail systems are developed without competing for funds.

However, some critics worry about potential delays and the merging of separate funding streams for roads and railways.

The results of the study, expected by autumn, will guide Switzerland's next steps in building an efficient and sustainable transport network.
