The Swiss village of Brienz in the canton of Graubünden is once again facing the threat of a massive landslide, prompting preparations for a potential evacuation.
Authorities have warned that up to 1.2 million cubic meters of debris could descend upon the village, endangering its approximately 90 residents.
The debris is currently moving at a rate of about 25 centimeters per day, but this could accelerate dramatically with further rainfall or rockfalls, potentially reaching speeds of 80 kilometers per hour.
The village had previously been evacuated in May 2023 due to similar threats, and a significant landslide occurred in June 2023, narrowly missing the village.
The local government has declared a "Phase Yellow" alert, urging residents to prepare for evacuation.
While experts hope for stabilization, the situation remains unpredictable, and the safety of the population is the top priority.
An information session for residents is scheduled to keep them updated on the evolving situation.
