The Swiss village of Brienz in the canton of Graubünden is facing a mandatory evacuation due to the imminent threat of a debris flow.
Residents must leave by Sunday noon as approximately 1.2 million cubic meters of rock debris are moving towards the village at a rate of 20 to 35 centimeters per day.
The local authorities, in collaboration with geological experts, have issued a warning that the debris could potentially reach speeds of over 80 kilometers per hour, posing a significant risk of partial or complete destruction of the village.
This situation mirrors a similar event from the previous year when a large rockslide narrowly missed the village.
The canton has pledged immediate financial assistance to cover relocation and rental costs for the affected residents.
An information session is scheduled to provide further guidance to the community.
