Zürich Bans Rottweiler Ownership

Published: 2024-12-19

The government of Zürich has announced a ban on the acquisition of Rottweilers starting January 1, 2025. This decision follows two recent attacks involving the breed, which left several people, including children, severely injured.

Current Rottweiler owners must apply for a permit and have their dogs undergo a behavioral assessment to evaluate potential risks.

The ban also applies to mixed breeds with more than 10% Rottweiler lineage.

While some support the move as a safety measure, others argue it unfairly targets a single breed.

Similar bans exist in other Swiss cantons, such as Geneva and Valais.

The government plans additional measures, including mandatory dog training courses, to enhance public safety.
