In Switzerland, the debate over wolf management intensifies as several cantons seek permission for preventive wolf culling.
Starting September 1, the federal government allows cantons to apply for wolf culling to prevent potential damage.
Graubünden, St.
Gallen, Tessin, Vaud, and Valais have already submitted applications.
Graubünden plans to cull 35 wolves, while Valais aims to reduce its wolf population by 25. The move comes amid concerns over wolves' impact on livestock, with 1,095 animals reportedly killed by wolves in the past year.
Environmental groups like Pro Natura and WWF Switzerland support preventive culling under strict conditions, emphasizing the need for plausible damage and adequate herd protection measures.
