Swiss Wolf Policy Sparks Controversy and Threats

The Swiss Federal Office for the Environment is facing challenges in filling a key position after the early retirement of Reinhard Schnidrig, the former head of the Wildlife and Species Promotion section.

Despite efforts, including hiring a specialized recruitment firm at a cost of 86,000 Swiss Francs, the position remains vacant, partly due to personal intervention by Federal Councillor Albert Rösti.

This vacancy is causing concern among cantonal authorities, who are urging a pragmatic solution as the upcoming wildlife regulation campaign approaches.

Meanwhile, the controversial wolf culling policy, which has been criticized for its legality and effectiveness, has led to severe threats against Rösti's department, highlighting the polarizing nature of the issue.

The situation underscores the tension between wildlife management and legal, ethical considerations in Switzerland.
