Switzerland is tackling the growing issue of illegal dog imports with a new campaign, "You Order.
Your Dog Pays.
" The campaign, launched by the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (BLV) and the Swiss Animal Protection (STS), aims to educate potential dog owners about the risks of buying pets online.
Many dogs sold through dubious online ads are bred under inhumane conditions abroad, leading to severe health and behavioral issues.
These animals often suffer from diseases, poor socialization, and genetic defects, causing lifelong problems for both the dogs and their owners.
Overwhelmed owners frequently abandon these pets, contributing to overcrowded shelters.
The campaign emphasizes responsible pet ownership, urging buyers to meet dogs in person and choose reputable breeders.
New laws also ban the commercial import of puppies under 15 weeks old, and Switzerland plans to strengthen international cooperation to combat this issue.
