Swiss Council Proposes Fur Import Ban

Published: 2024-08-21

The Swiss Federal Council has proposed a ban on the import and trade of fur products produced under cruel conditions, responding to the "Fur Initiative" which demands a prohibition on importing fur products that do not meet Swiss animal welfare standards.

Although the Council rejects the initiative, it supports its core aim and has presented a counter-proposal.

This proposal extends beyond the initiative by also banning the trade of such products within Switzerland, targeting professional traders but not private individuals.

The move comes after findings that 60% of fur sales outlets failed to comply with existing labeling requirements in 2023. The proposal is currently under consultation until November, with plans to present it to Parliament by summer 2025. The Council's approach aligns with international animal welfare guidelines, aiming to ensure compliance with global trade laws.
