Swiss Asylum System Endangers Children

Published: 2024-09-30

A recent study commissioned by the Swiss Federal Migration Commission (EKM) reveals alarming conditions for children in the Swiss asylum system.

Approximately 700 children and adolescents live in emergency shelters, with over half residing there for more than a year.

The study highlights that these conditions are incompatible with the Swiss Constitution and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, posing significant risks to the physical, mental, and social development of these minors.

Children in collective accommodations face traumatic experiences, including violence and forced deportations, leading to severe psychological distress.

The EKM urges immediate reforms, advocating for family-friendly housing, access to education, and psychological support.

The study's findings have prompted calls from various organizations for swift action to protect the rights and well-being of these vulnerable children.
