Switzerland Debates Restricting Ukrainian Refugee Status

Published: 2024-10-26

Switzerland is facing growing pressure to reassess the temporary protection status, known as Status S, granted to Ukrainian refugees.

As the war in Ukraine drags into its third year, Swiss cantons express frustration over the prolonged stay of refugees, with only 28% of working-age Ukrainians employed.

The Swiss National Council's State Political Commission has proposed ending Status S for those who travel to Ukraine for more than two weeks, a move seen as necessary to prevent abuse and improve acceptance of the status.

This proposal follows a similar motion by the St.

Gallen Councilor, which was accepted by the Council of States.

The Swiss Federal Council, however, warns against such restrictions, emphasizing the need for solidarity with Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict.

The debate highlights the tension between national policies and local challenges, as cantons struggle with the burden of accommodating refugees.
