Storms and Snow: A Swiss Weather Rollercoaster

Published: 2024-12-06

Switzerland is bracing for a turbulent weather weekend as two Atlantic storm systems are set to disrupt the region.

Starting Friday, strong southwest winds will sweep across the lowlands, reaching speeds of 50 to 80 km/h, while mountain peaks could experience gusts up to 120 km/h.

The snowline is expected to fluctuate dramatically, initially rising to 2000 meters before dropping to around 1000 meters by Sunday.

Although snow showers are anticipated in the lowlands by Monday, significant snowfall is likely only in the Jura and Alpine regions above 1000 meters, with accumulations of 10 to 40 cm.

The stormy conditions are expected to impact pre-Christmas activities, with potential disruptions to outdoor events.

As the week progresses, the wind will shift to the east, bringing cooler air but reducing the likelihood of substantial snowfall in the lowlands.
