The Seelisbergtunnel on the A2 highway has reopened following a fatal accident that caused significant traffic disruptions on Saturday morning.
Initially, the tunnel was closed in the northbound direction, leading to a complete blockage of the Axenstrasse due to a collision involving three vehicles.
This situation prompted the temporary closure of the Gotthard tunnel to manage the growing traffic jams.
As holiday traffic was already heavy in the Gotthard area, the situation worsened, with nine kilometers of congestion reported at the Gotthard-South portal and five kilometers at the North portal.
Authorities have since implemented detours to alleviate the traffic flow, but delays remain as travelers return from their holidays.
