Gotthard Tunnel Traffic Chaos

As the summer holidays draw to a close, traffic congestion has significantly increased at the Gotthard Tunnel's southern entrance, heading north.

On Friday, the traffic jam stretched to ten kilometers, causing a delay of one hour and 40 minutes for travelers, according to the Touring Club of Switzerland.

This congestion is attributed to the end-of-holiday rush on the A2 motorway, prompting authorities to close the Airolo TI motorway entrance to prevent detours through local villages.

In contrast, traffic heading south was lighter, with only a two-kilometer queue at the northern entrance in Göschenen UR, resulting in a 20-minute wait.

Travelers are advised to plan for potential delays as the holiday season concludes.
