Published: 2024-08-24

A tragic glider crash occurred on Friday afternoon near the Chistehorn in Niedergesteln, Switzerland, resulting in the deaths of two Swiss nationals aged 72 and 46. The glider had taken off from a flight base in the canton of Aargau around 12:30 PM.

A witness reported the crash to the Rega shortly before 4:00 PM, prompting a swift response from the Valais Cantonal Police and the Air Zermatt rescue team.

Unfortunately, upon arrival, the rescue team could only confirm the fatalities.

The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (SUST) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident, while the Federal Prosecutor's Office, in collaboration with the Valais Cantonal Police, is conducting a parallel criminal investigation.

The cause of the crash remains unknown at this time.
