In the recent Bern elections, the left-leaning coalition Rot-Grün-Mitte (RGM) successfully retained its majority in the city council, securing four out of five seats.
Despite efforts from the new center-right alliance "Meh Farb für Bärn," they were unable to overcome RGM's dominance, capturing only 33.1% of the vote compared to RGM's 66.9%.
Political analyst Mark Balsiger noted that RGM's superior mobilization efforts and the influence of national referendums helped secure their victory.
The election results further solidify Bern's position as a stronghold for leftist politics, with the city council now including members like Marieke Kruit and Ursina Anderegg, who advocate for progressive policies.
Meanwhile, Alec von Graffenried, the current city president, announced he will not run in the second round of elections, paving the way for Marieke Kruit to potentially become the first female city president in Bern's history.
This shift reflects a broader trend towards more progressive governance in the city.
