The left-wing alliance in Neuchâtel, comprising the Social Democratic Party (SP), Greens, and the Workers' Party, has achieved a historic victory in the first round of the cantonal government elections.
SP candidates Frédéric Mairy and Florence Nater were re-elected with significant majorities, marking a milestone for the party.
Meanwhile, the center-right alliance of the FDP, SVP, and the Center Party struggled, with their candidates trailing behind.
The FDP's Laurent Favre and Crystel Graf placed third and fifth, respectively, failing to secure outright wins.
This election underscores the growing strength of the left in urban areas like Neuchâtel and La Chaux-de-Fonds, where promises to lower public transport costs and cap health insurance premiums resonated with voters.
However, the left faces challenges in maintaining voter momentum for the second round on April 13, especially as the Greens' Céline Vara seeks to secure a seat.
The results highlight a polarized political landscape, with both alliances vying for dominance in a closely contested canton.
