SVP's Historic Rise in Solothurn

Published: 2025-03-10

The Solothurn elections of 2025 marked a historic shift as the Swiss People's Party (SVP) emerged as the strongest political force in the canton.

For the first time, the SVP overtook the Free Democratic Party (FDP) in the parliament, gaining four seats and securing 25.4% of the vote.

This victory comes alongside the party's strong performance in the first round of the government council elections, where their candidate, Sibylle Jeker, achieved a promising fourth place.

Despite no candidate securing an outright majority, Jeker's chances of breaking the SVP's long-standing exclusion from the Solothurn government are high.

The FDP, on the other hand, suffered a historic defeat, losing its century-long dominance in the parliament.

The second round of voting, scheduled for April 13, will determine whether the SVP can solidify its gains and claim a seat in the government for the first time.
