The Canton of Zurich has successfully concluded a two-year pilot program aimed at helping foreign offenders reintegrate into their home countries after serving prison sentences.
The initiative provided return counseling and support, enabling voluntary departures without police intervention, saving the canton significant costs.
Participants could shorten their prison terms by cooperating, with Zurich saving 370,000 Swiss francs in administrative and detention expenses.
The program also offered practical and financial assistance to help offenders rebuild their lives.
For instance, a Bosnian man, raised in Switzerland, learned sheep farming and Bosnian language skills during his sentence.
Upon returning, he established a successful sheep farming business.
Similarly, an Algerian man received support to open an electronics shop in his homeland.
The program's success has led Zurich to make it permanent by 2026, emphasizing the benefits of voluntary returns over forced deportations.
Authorities highlight the dignity and cooperation fostered by offering offenders a fresh start.
