The Zurich Airport is facing criticism from the cantonal government due to a significant increase in noise pollution, particularly from night flights.
In 2023, the number of people affected by aircraft noise rose to 53,000, surpassing the Zurich Noise Index limit of 47,000. This increase is attributed to a rise in night flights, which have grown by 37% compared to the previous year.
The government is urging the airport to raise noise fees to discourage flights after 11 PM and to promote the use of quieter aircraft.
The airport, acknowledging the issue, cites post-pandemic operational challenges and restricted airspace due to the Ukraine conflict as contributing factors.
Critics argue that current measures are insufficient, and a public vote on a night flight ban is anticipated in 2025.
