The future of St.
Gallen-Altenrhein Airport, the only airport in Eastern Switzerland, is under threat due to proposed budget cuts by the Swiss government.
The "People's Air Group," which operates the airport, has postponed a planned runway renovation scheduled for August 2025, citing a lack of financial support and planning security.
Instead, the airport will focus on essential repairs to maintain operations.
The Swiss government's "Relief Package 2027" includes cuts to funding for regional airports, which could result in a loss of up to 5 million Swiss francs annually for Altenrhein.
This has raised concerns in both Switzerland and neighboring Vorarlberg, Austria, as the airport serves as a vital link for 42,000 passengers annually, including business and leisure travelers.
Local officials and political leaders are urging action to secure the airport's future, emphasizing its economic importance to the region.
