Switzerland is seeking a safeguard clause to limit EU immigration, a move that has met resistance from the European Union.
Swiss politicians, including FDP President Thierry Burkart, advocate for a mechanism to curb immigration if it becomes excessive.
However, the EU, emphasizing the integrity of its single market, has rejected such unilateral measures.
The EU's firm stance was reiterated by EU Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, who urged Switzerland to expedite negotiations.
Despite the EU's opposition, Swiss officials are considering alternative strategies, including constitutional amendments, to manage immigration independently.
The ongoing negotiations are crucial, as they aim to finalize a new bilateral agreement by the end of the year.
