Switzerland is pushing for a safeguard clause in its negotiations with the European Union to manage high levels of immigration.
Swiss Federal Councillor Beat Jans emphasized the need for this clause to address domestic concerns such as housing shortages and rising rents, which are partly influenced by migration.
Jans argues that the clause would allow Switzerland to implement protective measures if immigration's negative impacts become too significant.
He also suggests that such a clause could benefit the EU by preventing a drain of skilled workers to Switzerland.
However, the EU has been resistant to a unilateral Swiss safeguard, as it conflicts with the principle of free movement within the EU.
The Swiss government remains optimistic about reaching a comprehensive agreement, despite ongoing challenges in the negotiations.
