Swiss Senator's Election Overturned

Published: 2025-03-26

The Swiss Federal Court has annulled the election of Simon Stocker as Schaffhausen's Senator due to residency issues.

Stocker, who defeated long-time Senator Thomas Minder in 2023, was found to have primarily lived in Zurich at the time of the election, violating Schaffhausen's strict residency requirements.

The court emphasized that a candidate's main residence must be in the canton they represent.

Stocker has accepted the ruling but expressed disappointment, citing its impact on modern family dynamics.

He plans to run again in the 2025 re-election.

Meanwhile, the vacant seat will remain unfilled until the new election, scheduled for June 2025. The case has reignited debates about the relevance of residency rules in today's mobile society.
