The race to replace Swiss Federal Councillor Viola Amherd is heating up, with Markus Ritter, president of the Swiss Farmers' Union, emerging as the sole confirmed candidate so far.

Ritter, known for his strong advocacy for farmers, announced his candidacy last week.

Meanwhile, several prominent figures, including Christophe Darbellay and Andrea Gmür, have withdrawn from consideration, citing personal and professional commitments.

The nomination process for the centrist party remains open until Monday, with potential candidates like Nicole Barandun and Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter still undecided.

The final decision on the party's nominee will be made on February 21, with the election set for the spring session of the Federal Assembly.
