Swiss Apology for Historic Injustices

Published: 2025-02-20

The Swiss government has formally apologized for the systemic persecution of the Jenish and Sinti communities between 1926 and 1973. During this period, around 600 children were forcibly taken from their families and placed in institutions or foster care under the "Pro Juventute" program, aimed at eradicating their nomadic lifestyle.

A recent legal review concluded that these actions constitute crimes against humanity, though they do not meet the criteria for genocide under international law.

Interior Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider expressed deep regret, acknowledging the severe harm inflicted on these communities.

Efforts for reparations have been ongoing, with 11 million Swiss francs allocated in 1992. The government has pledged to continue addressing the historical injustices in dialogue with affected groups.
