SRF Cuts Science Journalism Amid Backlash

Published: 2025-02-15

Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) has announced significant budget cuts, including the closure of its science magazine by 2026. This move is part of the SRF 4.0 project, which aims to save 8 million Swiss francs by cutting 50 full-time positions by 2025. The decision has sparked internal and external criticism, with employees expressing concerns about the weakening of science journalism.

Some staff shared their frustrations on LinkedIn, but later deleted posts, reportedly under pressure from management.

SRF denies issuing direct orders to remove the posts but emphasized that criticism should remain internal.

Supporters of the cuts argue they are overdue and necessary to adapt to declining revenues and rising costs.

Despite the backlash, SRF maintains that its science department remains the largest in Switzerland.
