Rise in Phone Scam Alarms Authorities

Authorities in Bern and Emmering are warning residents about a surge in phone scams involving so-called "shock calls.

" Scammers falsely claim that a loved one has caused a serious accident and demand immediate cash payments to avoid legal trouble.

In Bern, three victims have already handed over large sums of money, while a 91-year-old man in Emmering lost €15,000 to this scheme.

The scammers use psychological pressure, including fake crying in the background, to manipulate their targets.

Police advise the public to remain skeptical of such calls, avoid sharing personal or financial details, and verify claims by contacting family members directly.

They emphasize that legitimate authorities never demand cash or valuables over the phone.

Suspicious calls should be reported immediately to local police.
