The Swiss town of Muttenz is set to vote on a public spitting ban this Thursday, following the footsteps of other municipalities like Liestal and major cities worldwide such as Singapore and New York.
The proposed regulation aims to impose a fine of 100 Swiss Francs for unsanitary spitting in public spaces.
This initiative is part of a revised police regulation to curb indecent behavior.
While the local police will not conduct special patrols to catch offenders, they will extend their regular rounds to enforce the rule.
Exceptions will be made for those with valid reasons, such as medical conditions.
The challenge remains in effectively monitoring and ensuring compliance with the ban, a concern that led Birsfelden to reject a similar proposal.
Wallisellen was the first Swiss town to implement such a ban in 2007, setting a precedent for others to follow.
