In a heated debate, the Zurich City Council has decided to temporarily retain two of the previously free disposal coupons, despite the city government's plan to abolish them.
The coupons allowed residents to dispose of up to 400 kilograms of bulky waste annually at no cost.
The city argued that the coupons led to unnecessary car trips and were not beneficial for non-car owners.
Instead, they proposed expanding mobile recycling services, including up to 30 new mobile recycling centers.
These centers aim to replace the aging Cargo-Tram and E-Tram, offering free disposal and item exchange services.
However, the council insists on keeping the coupons until the new system is fully operational, highlighting concerns over accessibility and practicality for full-time workers.
The debate underscores the city's commitment to sustainable waste management while balancing public convenience.
