Switzerland will take over the chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in 2026, marking its third time leading the group after 1996 and 2014. The announcement was made by Malta’s Foreign Minister Ian Borg, the current OSCE chair.
Switzerland assumes this role during a challenging period, as the OSCE faces geopolitical tensions and the ongoing war between two member states, Russia and Ukraine.
Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis expressed hope for a ceasefire in Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and collaboration to address global security challenges.
Starting January 2025, Switzerland will begin preparatory leadership duties alongside Malta and Finland.
The OSCE, with 57 member states, remains a vital platform for peace and post-conflict rebuilding, despite its limited effectiveness in recent years due to internal divisions.
