Switzerland has officially joined the European Sky Shield Initiative, becoming its 15th member.
This initiative, launched by Germany in 2022, aims to enhance Europe's air defense capabilities, especially in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The signing of the accession declaration by Armasuisse Chief Urs Loher does not impose any obligations on Switzerland.
The country retains the freedom to decide its level of participation and the systems it will procure.
The Swiss Federal Council had already decided to join the initiative earlier this year, with parliamentary committees also approving the move.
The Sky Shield Initiative seeks to address gaps in Europe's current defense shield.
