In a significant shift in Swiss energy policy, a recent survey reveals that 53% of the population now supports lifting the ban on constructing new nuclear power plants.
This change comes despite the 2017 decision to prohibit such developments as part of the Energy Strategy 2050. The Swiss Federal Council, led by Energy Minister Albert Rösti, has proposed overturning the ban, citing the need for a reliable energy supply.
The survey highlights a gender divide, with 63% of men supporting the change compared to only 44% of women.
Political affiliations also play a role, with strong support from SVP and FDP voters, while Green and SP party members largely oppose the move.
The debate is expected to intensify as the Federal Council prepares to present the proposed legislative changes to Parliament.
