Swiss Greens Oppose New Nuclear Plants

Published: 2024-10-19

The Swiss Green Party has unanimously passed a resolution opposing the construction of new nuclear power plants in Switzerland.

During their assembly in Herisau, party president Lisa Mazzone emphasized a "referendum legislature" to counteract what she described as an "ideological rollback" proposed by the government.

The Greens argue that new nuclear plants are environmentally and economically unsound, posing safety risks and hindering renewable energy expansion.

They are prepared to launch a referendum if necessary.

Energy Minister Albert Rösti's support for new nuclear facilities is seen by the Greens as an "absurd and costly" idea.

The party is also backing the "Environmental Responsibility Initiative" for a sustainable economy, set for a public vote in February 2025.
