Switzerland's Defense Department (VBS) is facing a leadership crisis as both Army Chief Thomas Süssli and Intelligence Chief Christian Dussey have announced their resignations.
Süssli will remain in his role until the end of 2025, while Dussey will stay until March 2026. These resignations follow a series of scandals, including procurement issues and internal conflicts, which have plagued the department.
Former Defense Minister Viola Amherd, who also recently stepped down, had aimed to modernize the military and intelligence services, but her tenure ended amidst these challenges.
The new defense minister, to be elected on March 12, will inherit a department in turmoil, with urgent decisions needed to address personnel and project delays.
Critics argue that these resignations highlight deeper systemic issues within the VBS.
