In Basel, scammers are targeting unsuspecting drivers by placing fake QR codes on parking meters to steal credit card information.
The Basel-Stadt Cantonal Police have warned that these counterfeit codes are difficult to detect.
The scam involves redirecting users to a fraudulent website, parksmartbasel.
com, which mimics the official ParkSmartBasel app but contains errors and lacks functionality.
Victims who fall for the scam not only risk losing their credit card details but may also receive a parking fine, as the parking fee remains unpaid.
The fake site was registered on September 16, and the scam primarily affects visitors unfamiliar with the official app.
Regular users of the app are less likely to be deceived, as the QR code is only used for locating the parking meter, with payment processed through the app itself.
