On Wednesday afternoon, four climbers in the Bernina region of Engadin were caught off guard by a sudden thunderstorm.

A 26-year-old man was struck by lightning, causing him to fall approximately ten meters and sustain serious injuries.

His 25-year-old girlfriend, who called for help, was also struck when her mobile phone was hit by lightning, but she only suffered minor injuries.

Both were rescued by a Rega helicopter and flown to a hospital in Zurich.

The couple's parents, along with another couple who came to assist, were evacuated by a Heli Bernina AG helicopter to a nearby parking area.

The Graubünden cantonal police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.
