Karin Keller-Sutter has been elected as Switzerland's Federal President for 2025, succeeding Viola Amherd.
Keller-Sutter, a member of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), received 168 out of 232 votes from the United Federal Assembly.
Despite the largely ceremonial nature of the role, her election marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first woman from her party to hold this position.
Guy Parmelin, from the Swiss People's Party (SVP), will serve as Vice President.
Keller-Sutter's presidency comes at a time of political challenges, including debates over budget cuts and financial policies.
Her leadership will be crucial in navigating these issues, especially with ongoing discussions about Switzerland's relationship with the EU and internal financial reforms.
Keller-Sutter has emphasized the importance of compromise and collaboration in her new role.
