The city of Bern is grappling with a major procurement scandal involving its logistics department.
An investigation revealed that between 2015 and 2024, numerous office furniture contracts were awarded without competition, violating procurement rules and causing significant financial damage.
A city employee, who acted knowingly and maintained close ties with the supplier, has been dismissed.
Another employee was found negligent for failing to detect the irregularities.
The exact financial loss remains unclear, but the city has pledged to overhaul its control systems and ensure compliance with legal standards.
The incident has also tarnished Bern's reputation, prompting inquiries from the Swiss Competition Commission (WEKO).
