Zurich's Smart Meter Revolution

Published: 2024-10-03

The city of Zurich is undergoing a significant technological transformation with the installation of smart meters across all buildings by 2036. This initiative, driven by the city's energy providers, aims to replace 300,000 conventional electricity meters and 33,000 water meters with digital smart meters.

These devices will allow residents to monitor their energy and water consumption in real-time, promoting energy efficiency and cost savings.

The transition is part of Switzerland's Energy Strategy 2050, which mandates that 80% of traditional electricity meters be replaced by 2027. The smart meters will provide detailed consumption data, helping users optimize their usage and detect issues like leaks.

The installation process, already underway, is expected to be completed by 2029 for electricity meters and by 2036 for water meters, with no additional costs to residents unless structural changes are needed for installation.
