Zürich's Housing Crisis: A Path Forward

Published: 2024-12-12

The Canton of Zürich is grappling with a severe housing shortage, prompting the government to propose legislative changes aimed at simplifying the construction process.

Despite a growing demand for housing, construction activity has been below average, leading to higher rents and property prices.

In response, the government suggests easing regulations to boost construction and expand housing supply, thereby stabilizing rental prices.

A counterproposal to a housing initiative emphasizes creating favorable conditions for adequate housing supply without heavy market intervention.

The government also supports a "Starthilfe" initiative to assist first-time homebuyers by covering up to 15% of the purchase price, targeting younger generations.

However, it opposes initiatives that mandate equal construction of rental and ownership properties, arguing they could limit private sector involvement and worsen the housing crisis.
