Zurich Hospital Probes Heart Surgery Deaths

Published: 2024-08-22

The University Hospital Zurich is under scrutiny as an independent commission, led by former federal judge Niklaus Oberholzer, investigates a series of deaths in its heart surgery department from 2016 to 2020. This investigation follows allegations of unethical practices and the use of unauthorized implants under the former head of heart surgery, Francesco Maisano.

The hospital aims to restore public trust by thoroughly examining 350 deaths out of 7,000 procedures, alongside potential economic conflicts of interest.

Oberholzer, known for his independence and expertise, will assemble a team of medical and forensic experts to ensure a comprehensive review.

The commission has the authority to expand its investigation and aims to deliver a report within a year.

Hospital leadership acknowledges past issues and emphasizes improvements in patient care and transparency.
