WHO Urges China for COVID-19 Data

Published: 2024-12-31

Five years after the COVID-19 pandemic began, the World Health Organization (WHO) is urging China to share more data to uncover the virus's origins.

The WHO emphasized that understanding the origins is both a moral and scientific necessity to prepare for future pandemics.

Despite a 2021 investigation suggesting the virus likely originated from wildlife in Wuhan, the exact source remains unclear.

The lack of transparency and cooperation from China has hindered progress, with the WHO warning that global pandemic preparedness depends on international collaboration.

Since the pandemic's start, over 777 million cases and 7 million deaths have been reported, though the true toll is believed to be much higher.

Efforts to establish a global pandemic treaty are ongoing, but challenges remain in ensuring swift information sharing and equitable vaccine distribution.
