The Urnersee is set to undergo a significant transformation as five million tons of rock from the construction of the second Gotthard road tunnel are deposited into the lake.
This ambitious project aims to create seven hectares of new shallow water zones by 2027, enhancing habitats for aquatic life.
Daily, up to 4,000 tons of material are transported by train to Flüelen, where it is then moved by barge to designated areas in the lake.
These zones, reaching depths of up to ten meters, will support the growth of water plants and provide essential environments for fish and invertebrates.
The project, costing 62 million Swiss Francs, is designed to improve water quality and biodiversity, while also addressing past environmental impacts.
Despite some controversy over contract awards, the initiative is seen as a vital step in restoring the lake's ecosystem.
