Switzerland is ramping up its military drone capabilities with a new initiative backed by a 47 million Swiss Franc budget.
The Swiss Defense Department has launched a "Drone Taskforce" to develop advanced drone technology by 2027. Traditionally focused on reconnaissance drones, the Swiss military is now testing armed drones, with trials planned in remote areas like Val Cristallina.
The Ukraine war has highlighted the strategic importance of drones, shifting global military tactics towards smaller, cost-effective systems.
Despite Switzerland's strong expertise in drone technology, challenges remain, including strict export laws and limited interest from local start-ups.
Experts warn that without the ability to profit from international sales, domestic manufacturers may hesitate to invest in military drone development.
