In a significant political event, Swiss voters have decisively rejected two major proposals: the reform of occupational pensions (BVG-Reform) and the Biodiversity Initiative.
The BVG-Reform, which aimed to lower the conversion rate from 6.8% to 6% to address increased life expectancy, was met with a strong 68% opposition.
This reform was seen as a compromise, but its failure leaves the pension system in a state of uncertainty.
Similarly, the Biodiversity Initiative, which sought to enhance protection for landscapes and localities, was also turned down with 63% voting against it.
The results reflect a clear urban-rural divide, with urban areas like Basel-Stadt showing some support for the initiatives, while rural regions largely opposed them.
The low voter turnout, with participation around 43.5%, highlights a lack of engagement with these complex issues.
