Swiss Politician Faces Blasphemy Charges

Published: 2024-12-18

Sanija Ameti, a politician from Switzerland's Green Liberal Party (GLP), is under investigation for allegedly disturbing religious freedom.

The Zurich prosecutor's office confirmed the case, which stems from a controversial social media post by Ameti featuring a damaged image of the Virgin Mary.

The incident, which occurred three months ago, sparked significant public backlash.

If found guilty under Switzerland's rarely used blasphemy laws, Ameti could face a fine.

Over the past 15 years, only 62 convictions have been made under these laws.

Ameti has since spoken out, expressing regret for her actions while maintaining her political stance.
